The Beauty of the Pearl
We use the highest quality pearls in our jewellery with them being in the top 5-10% of harvesting.
Pearls were the first gems discovered by man thousands of years ago. Since that time, people of many cultures have recognized the beauty and value of pearls. Pearls are the only organic gems and require no processing to reveal their natural beauty. At first, people relied on the chance finding of natural pearls in a variety of species of marine bivalves and freshwater mussels.
Natural pearls are rare as perhaps maybe 1 in 4000 pearl oysters contain a natural pearl. Natural pearls are formed when the pearl oyster reacts to an irritant by coating it with nacre, the shiny iridescent material found on the inner surface of the shell. Natural pearls are usually small, of various colours and irregular in shape. The high value of natural pearls led to the creation of pearl fisheries in many parts of the world where pearl producing mollusks were found. One of the principal advantages of pearl production is that the final product is lightweight and non- perishable. If properly managed, pearl farming will not harm the environment and can increase the wild pearl oyster population over a period of years. We aim to ensure we engage with pearl farms who look after the environment and give due care and consideration to sustainable and responsible practices.
Only 5-10% of each crop of pearls will be of high gem quality. Producing top quality pearls is achieved by taking good care of the pearl oysters during all stages of farming.
Good water quality
Pearl oysters prefer clean, clear water far away from sources of contamination such as chemicals, oil, sewage or other pollution. A general rule is that a site with thriving corals will be a good site for pearl oysters and will produce high quality pearls.
A healthy reef is critical for ensuring good quality pearls. Therefore our pearl farmers ensure they maintain the condition of coral reef areas. Pearl oysters grow best when their environment is healthy. Therefore, they take care not to break or damage corals when setting and maintaining the farm – the health of their Pearl farm depends on the health of the reef.
Tending the farm is an important part of producing good pearls. Growing pearl oysters is the same as growing any crop; the farm must be tended often for the pearl oysters to grow well and produce high quality pearls. Building good relations with our suppliers, our pearl suppliers regularly inspect the pearl farms for any maintenance needs such as cleaning the pearl farm.
Such inspections allow pearl farmers to judge when the pearl oysters need to be cleaned with the pearl oysters and lines being cleaned by suppliers at least on a monthly basis.
Exploited stocks can receive frequent handling stresses which often predispose farmed animals to infection and diseases. Therefore, health management of pearl oysters is an integral part of our suppliers routine.
The Working conditions of those working on the pearl farms is also an important consideration with suppliers ensuring no use of child labour, fair wages for employees; and employee health and wellbeing is taken into account by ensuring time off, appropriate diving gear and safety protocols are considered to name a few.
